This is a haunting story in more ways than one as we see Arafinwe before the broken gates of Angband wondering if it’d all been worth it, grieving for all that had been lost to him, wishing to understand why his brother Nolofinwe had challenged Morgoth to single battle, a battle he could not have won, wishing that his older brother had been there to fight by his side. And as Arafinwe voices his anguish and his anger at his brother’s death, an answer is given to him.... This is one of my favorites for the mood that it evokes, it’s spookiness just perfect for Halloween, but readable any time of the year.

This story is as impressive as the characters upon which it is based. Finarfin is in the unfortunate position of being the last one left standing. He weeps for many things, not least of which is the death of his brother Fingolfin/Nolofinwe, the greatest and most valiant warrior of all the Noldor. Finarfin does not understand what motivated his brother to do what he did, but as this story unfolds, he gets some insight and emotional satisfaction. The characterization is true and the dialogue very well written. This is a well-crafted story.
