Summary: On the Fellowship’s first day out from Lórien, Merry and Pippin unknowingly teach Boromir a lesson in hope. This is NOT what you think - no slash, I promise, just some good Hobbity mischief.

This is such a sweet and funny tale of Merry and Pippin pulling one over on Boromir -- I love it! It's quite fun to watch these two hobbits carefully planning their scheme and then carrying it out, and all the while, we as readers are uncertain as to what these two have up their sleeves. It's just as obvious to Boromir that they have something planned, but all he can do is wait until they spring their little plot. I love how joyfully they laugh and tussle together after the revelation of the lesson they want to teach Boromir -- but even more, I love how Boromir accepts the lesson-learning graciously, and thus turns the tables on those two mischievous hobbits!

Agape4Gondor never fails in writing Boromir. His curiosity and thoughtfulness ring true, and it's fascinating to see this perspective of Aragorn, who is so very clearly feeling the stress and constraints of leadership for the company. It provides a great contrast to Merry and Pippin, who are much more interested in trying out the elven cloaks. It's a lesson for all involved, and I appreciate the sentiment Boromir expresses at the end. I suspect that with the possible exception of Aragorn, the rest might have had doubts, too.

The Lady Galadriel had explained that the cloaks given the Fellowship could perhaps allow them to more easily walk unseen through the wild, and Merry and Pippin are eager to try them out. In so doing, they help give Boromir new hope. A nice interlude in which Boromir is distracted from his fears for his land and people and the temptations by the Ring. In the end we, too, rejoice for the simple pleasures offered by travelling with Hobbits! Sweetly written.

Stories about the Fellowship that never made it into canon are fun to read and this one is no different. Agape’s depiction of Boromir is always sympathetic and we see a side of this great warrior rarely shown in fanon. He and the others indeed learn a lesson from Merry and Pippin, who, in their own inimitable way, demonstrate their worth to the Fellowship. A fun read.

This sounds so typical for Merry and Pippin. They had to test the cloaks and what better 'victim' than Boromir. They probably planned the assault all day long. I like the characterization of the hobbits and Boromir.

I can easily see Merry and Pippin conspiring to raise Boromir's spirits after leaving Lorien, as well as their curiousity about how their gifts might work!
