A drabble is a real art form, done well it creates a complete story in a short space. Aearwen has certainly achieved that in this drabble about the moment when Maedhros shows his stubborn streak and decides to counteract the pity for his plight that he senses in others and retrain himself to fight with his left hand. We sense that this is the moment too when he chooses to re-embrace life and destiny again, for good or ill.

Oh! Go Maedhros! I love the range of emotions that Aearwen has brought together in such as short space. Not just Maedhros's determination at the end to re-learn a skill with the other hand but his frustration, discomfort and doubt about his current condition. This is a wonderful example of how much can be told in one hundred words, with every word carefully chosen and working hard, and a satisfying story arc and resolution. Great writing!

Maedhros is determined to relearn using a sword with his other hand. Righly so, after all he has plenty of time ahead of him. Aearwen gives us a smoothly crafted miniature that shows the kind of attitude needed to cope with disability.

Aearwen ably conveys the tragedy of Maedhros' predicament; his frustration; the conflict inherent in his condition, and then shows the Elf-lord's reserves of strength as he musters his determination to overcome the obstacle of a missing hand. Nicely done!

For those who age at far less than a snail's pace and who have all the time in the world to relearn old skills, what Maedhros does makes perfect sense. Nor will he or his people long survive if they fail to do the best they can with what has been given or left to them. The title is well chosen, and the story well cut.

A nicely done and heartbreaking drabble about the aftermath of Maedhros' rescue from Thangorodrim.
