I've read this story before (as with all of your stories!) Again, as with the first time or two, I felt Ereinion's sort of desperation at being apart from the world where he lived, and the one where he came from. I like to think that he and Celeborn were of similar mind. They certainly both felt like kings to me, at least that's how I always image them both. I think they would have ruled the same way, due to similar connections to their people and land...

I was surprised by Celeborn's unexpected patience in this story. He reacted much more vigorously to the sons of Fëanor in the story "Oak and Willow." But then, Gil-galad is very much a child here, and given that, I think we're just seeing another aspect of Celeborn's character, and it's an aspect that intrigues me very much. Celeborn shows his usual penchant for insight and perception in seeing what Gil-galad might become, and Gil-galad shows some surprising maturity and forthrightness, especially given the counsel of his tutor. Círdan is a quieter presence in the story, but I think that's how he should be. Much like the sea, actually. He's there, but you don't really notice him until he needs to be noticed. Good characterization work all around.
