Summary: 200 words Denethor and Faramir spend some quality time together. A double drabble

This delightful piece makes me smile and chuckle every time I re-read it. Here, Denethor is watching over little Faramir in the Steward's chamber of office, and the tyke is getting into mischief, or trying to, in the manner of curious toddlers and teething puppies. Denethor's thoughts and responses are right on target, revealing a perceptive and tolerant man who knows the habits of his small sons. There is a sense of amused distance, understandable in a father who is also the ruler of the greatest human city in Sauron-free Middle-earth. The last line is particularly funny, and is also a punchline of sorts, since the entire ficlet leads to it, though the rest of the drabble is quite funny in its own right.

*giggle* Ah, poor Denethor, trying to save his keepsakes from being gnawed on by a baby! I do wonder what on earth compelled him to decide that his study was a good place for baby-sitting - perhaps Denethor just felt more comfortable there than in the nursery? I do feel for him; children that age just want to jam everything in their mouths, and they are no respecters of price or sentimentalism! If they can reach it, they'll try to eat it. Thank goodness Gandalf gave Denethor that pipe! Maybe Thorongil gave Denethor some knick-knack little Faramir can slobber on?

I donít think I will ever not love this sweet and funny little story. Itís certainly a situation that anyone who has spent much time around small children can relate to, but what I really adore about this is the way Denethor is drawn in a sympathetic light as he frantically tries to keep his cherished possessions out of his young sonís mouth. I also liked Boromir's cameo--I can just picture him revealing that information from the lofty heights of older-brotherhood. And, of course, that last line is just hilarious.

Proud papa Denethor and single digit Faramir who can't keep toys out of his mouth are the stars here. The ficlet is cute and seamlessly illustrates the Steward's opinion of wizards.

"And so Denethor himself planted the seeds of the future affection between his second son and the wizard". Very funny and feels right. And I'm glad the baby is rather a generic baby with nothing predicting the future great man.

Heh! I was expecting the usual sort of by-play between the Steward and an adolescent or adult Faramir, not Denethor dealing with toddler Faramir so that Finduilas could take a nap! Very sweet and very funny at the end.

[{spoilers] A hilarious ficlet concerning Faramir and his father. The toddler,Faramir wants to play in his father's study and chew Denethor's treasured pocessions. Unlike in many stories,Denethor is portrayed as a patient and kindly father. The last line carries a real punch and makes me smile every time I read it.

Hee! Oh, this is a fun moment, and I can completely see it happening the way you laid it out. And it's good to see Denethor and Faramir interacting naturally, and Denethor as a good father - so much to love in this ficlet. Nice work, Alawa.

Well - Denethor never did care much for Mithrandir! I can just see Faramir chewing contemplatively on the end of a pipe. Now all he needs is some soapy water and he could invent bubble-blowing. I like a more humane Denethor - and I suspect he would have made Faramir a reasonably good parent ... under other circumstances.

A delightful view of the haressed father beginning to find out 'what all the fuss is about' when it comes to looking after small children! And a very nice touch is Denethor's almost gleeful, to paraphrase the story - you can have that, it came from Mithrandir - that made me chuckle.

Small Faramir's at the mouthing stage, and nothing is safe from his exploration. Most of the gifts Denethor has received he's unwilling to allow his small son to taste, but the one from the Wizard.... Cute, and so true to life.
