A sweet vignette with Bilbo and Gandalf watching Frodo sleep in Imladris after the end of the Ring War. Antane traces, through the wizard and the elderly hobbit, the tremendous cost that Frodo has paid for the defeat of the Shadow, and the sorrow that Bilbo feels for his heir's ordeal. Frodo and Bilbo went far beyond the life of hobbitkind, both of them bearing, for too long a time, a burden created by and for a much more powerful and vicious being. A reminder that a victory on this scale is usually bittersweet, and it is often the most innocent who pay an undeserved price.

-- Thank you for your review! Yes, a very high price but also a great reward to come in honor of such suffering willingly endured. God bless.

This is deeply touching. The dialogue is vivid, and the author's portrayal of Bilbo's love and guilt, and Gandalf's affectionate reassurance, makes this story well worth reading. Not only does Gandalf remind Bilbo that Providence is always at work, this tale also serves to remind us that sometimes good does come out of bad. This story is both deeply emotional and very logical.

In a sense, Tolkien's Bilbo is fortunate. By the time he sees Frodo again, post-Ring War, his memory is failing: he can't even remember the fate of the Ring from one moment to the next. But Antane's Bilbo is only too cognizant of all that happened to Frodo, and he blames himself for it. Gandalf, in no-nonsense fashion, soon puts him straight by explaining the part that Bilbo himself had in ridding the world of Sauron's evil. He also gives Bilbo new eyes with which to see Frodo, not as a victim, but as a hero.

Poor guilt-ridden Bilbo! How I'd love to sweep him up and tell him that Frodo's post-Quest demons are not his fault, and that everything will turn out just fine. Thankfully, Gandalf is there to do the job for me (albeit in a more dignified, rational manner), and to sensibly point out what would surely have happened had Bilbo not found the Ring and stayed his hand instead of slaying Gollum all those years ago. A touching, bittersweet fic. Well done, Cousin!

-- Le hannon, my dear cousin, for such a kind review! Wonderful to hear from you! God bless, your berry who misses you and your masterpieces...

A Most Special Birthday is a touching look at Bilbo's mindset post-quest. His emotions here are understandable and relatable, though unfounded.
