Absolutely one of the funniest things in the LOTR fandom, an opinion I have not changed since I first read this story. Anoriath's dry wit draws the reader subtly in, straight-faced as can be as she draws the whole ludicrous - and believable! - situation in marvelous clarity. (After all, these are soldiers, LOL!) Nor does it hurt a bit that everyone's favorite prince of Dol Amroth, Imrahil, is prominently featured. Better yet, His Highness seems to likewise possess a droll sense of humor, for one cannot imagine he does not catch on to the joke. Marvelously clever and deliciously silly, this ficlet remains one of my favorites.

There are only a handful of stories that can truly exploit or create the wonderful "D'oh!" moments in Middle-earth, and this is one of them. Gaflin seems to be an capable enough actor to convince Imrahil that the chicken came from "over younder" even as he's struggling to clean his teeth, so kudos to him for avoiding the full impacts of the D'oh moment. But I was grinning the entire time, and I wonder if Imrahil didn't suspect something after all but chose to let it slide in view of the battle they'd all just survived. Brilliant story! I always did wonder what happened to that bird..

Oh, the irony! I love it! Here we have the high chivalric tone of Tolkien clashing against the practicality of the hoi polloi rest of us, with hilarious results. Save for the rooster, that is. Sublimely ridiculous, in just the right, black humorous way.

An interesting moment. this is a humorous look at a very ordinary moment, and you did a good job getting that across. Well done.

A bit of irony here, and a wonderful examination of the difference in perspective between the noble leaders and captains, and that of the ordinary soldiers.

A hilarious look at the aftermath of the battle. I guess a rooster can bring cheer in more than one way to weary soldiers.

A wonderful touch of realism. This certainly seem to be a good answer to the question posed in the summary.
