I am sorry if anyone feels "boxed out" of the post-mortem. That wasn't
at all my intention.

, we have been carrying out the post-mortem at the Yahoo group
"mefa-discussion". The reason for this is that in the past some
members of this group have felt overwhelmed by the sheer volume of
posts when they just wanted to participate in the awards, not deal
with all of the policy decisions. So at some point during the 2006
awards I made the decision to reserve this list for those policy
discussions (which would definitely include the post mortem!), and
reserve this list for making official announcements and also giving
people a place to ask how to do things.

The post mortem is still going on, and you or anyone else is still
welcome to join in. If you are not a member of the group please join

At the mefa-discussion list we have been discussing what to do with
author reviews next year. This is a big issue that will affect
everyone, so I want everyone to have the opportunity to vote on this.

But here's a cliff's-note version:

There are problems with author reviews. They're nice for the author to
read but can often take valuable time away from reviewing stories. And
they cause a lot of confusion. The MEFAs is an involved competition,
and I want to make it as easy to understand as possible.

So... if we are going to have author reviews next year, it will have
to be done differently. Llinos and Sulriel suggested an idea which I
changed a little bit because of technical concerns (someone has to
make this all work with our website!). Basically, this year authors
were divided up based on the main category their story was in, and
then further divided into fixed-length ficlet authors, poetry authors,
and authors of everything else.

Under the new proposed system, we wouldn't divide authors based on the
categories their stories are in. There would be one big group of the
fixed-length ficlet authors, another group of the poetry authors, and
another group of authors who wrote something besides FLF and poetry.
Because these groups are so big we wouldn't award first, second, and
third place. Instead we would make a list of "commended authors". You
would vote for authors just like you did this year, the points would
be added up, and the top [x]% would be given a banner and would be
listed when the story results are posted.

I say "[x]%" because the exact % is debatable. Some have suggested
10%, others 20%. The key point is that the more authors in a certain
group, the more that would be recognized. It's a little like
honourable mentions for stories this way.

That's one of the options. It's option #2 of the poll I want everyone
to vote in. The other option (option #1) is to not have author reviews
next year, and only do story reviews.

I forgot to mention one thing. Members of the mefa-discussion group
have already voted in a poll on this issue. If you voted in that,
please don't vote in this. The polls are basically identical, and I'll
add the two polls together to see what everyone thinks. I don't want
to ask anyone to have to vote *twice*. :^)

I keep trying to vote for Option #2, but keep getting "Your vote as been
cancelled", so I'm posting my vote

Hey guys,

I had said that the author review poll would run until 11:59 PM, 26
January GMT. It is now 2:12 AM, 27 January GMT. Which means the poll
is closed. It actually should have closed two hours ago, but I was
busy with other things.

The results:

53 people voted. Of those 53 people:
- 26 (49.06%) voted for no author votes
- 21 (39.62%) voted for the modified author vote I described
- 6 (11.32%) had no strong opinion.

So it looks like we won't have author votes next year. I appreciate
everyone's participation in this poll.

Basically you're asked whether people should be allowed to nominate 25
or 20 pieces next year.

A lower limit means that some members will have to be more selective
in what they nominate. This means that more good stories may not get
nominated. On the other hand, a higher limit means that there could be
more stories nominated. This means that more good stories may not get
as many reviews.

What do you think? Please vote by 11:59 PM Wednesday night, GMT.

Oh, just so everyone knows - I posted a similar review over at the LJ.
Please only vote in one so I can add the two together and get an

I don't know whether you can see who votes for what, or if the polling
software is properly working and properly preventing duplicates, but it
didn't seem to do anything when I voted... and I got distracted, so I might

I set this one to only display who voted what way after voting was
done. I had reasons, but I can't remember it offhand. Note the late
hour of my setting up the poll, and the fact that I'm on the U.S. east
coast - my "reasoning" may not bear scrutiny under light of day.

Anyway, I think that Yahoo only lets you vote once and after that
overwrites your vote if you're logged in as the same ID. So I don't
think it's a problem.

But I'll make sure once the poll closes if you like. What did you vote
for? And what's your Yahoo ID? (Feel free to answer those privately if
you'd prefer...)
