This one gave me a definite "awwww" moment. I know some like to think of Denethor simply as someone who was a cold, calculating ruler, and that side of him was definitely there. But I also think that he genuinely loved Finduilas (as Tolkien writes in the appendices), and that she would bring out a more gentle side of him that we see more in his son Faramir. After all, the only time we really see him is when he's in grief over Boromir, and years after Finduilas' passing. Perhaps that's just my wishful thinking, wanting to think him with a softer and ever-so-cuddly side, but you've captured that aspect of his personality marvellously.

An intimate little scene between Finduilas and Denethor. I especially liked this turn of phrase: "Something stirred against his palm, like the flutter of an owls wing brushing silently past on a midsummers evening." Very nicely captures the swiftness and slightness of that movement.

Very nice. I particularly like the knowing Finduilas and Denethor in an arena where he has no power or control - he is most endearing that way.

Very touching. I like the good!Denethor moments. There aren't nearly enough of them, and this is something that most people can relate to. Very simple, and yet still beyond what we understand.
