Adventure, friendship, sacrifice, an evil beastie bested; this story has it all. I followed it avidly when it appeared and it was just as good upon re-reading it. The burgeoning friendship between Eärendil and the Maia Eönwë goes through an ‘interesting’ time as they fight Morgoth’s creatures that have remained behind. Characters are well-defined (including Vingilot!), and the final turn with Eönwë’s sacrifice for his friend’s sake is excellent, touching without veering into over-sentimentality. The story also sets the scene for other stories by the same author, but stands well on its own.

You always know with a Mirach story that you will be in for adventure, and such is the case with this one. This time, instead of Aragorn, it's Eärendil and Eönwë, with a strong supporting cast including Vingilot herself, perfectly rendered with a personality all her own and one you would expect from a ship beloved by its sailing master. The enemies in this tale are chilling and evil and everything you'd expect from beings made by Morgoth, and evil indeed are Eärendil's days when he runs afoul of them. His good friend Eönwë has his hands full rescuing him this time, and their perils and hardships are the reader's delight.

A beautiful story about friendship between Eonwe and Earendil. Earendil is in great danger and he is rescued only thanks to love and sacrifice of his friend, which is truly the greatest message of this story: love and friendship are stronger than everything. Beautifully done.

This is a wonderful story about how Eärendil and Eönwë become friends, and how they learn that they have more in common than might be imagined.
