I love this story, and not just because it came from my bunny. This is a gapfiller for what I find one of the more intriguing sentences in The Two Towers. Just how and why DID Merry know that the stones might tip up on the unwary, and let them down into foul pits? These authors answer the questions brilliantly, and in an unexpected fashion. Normally, one would expect the victim to be Pippin, and at one point it seems as though it might be. But it turns out to be Merry who nearly drowns and Pippin who saves him--using the knowledge and lessons he has learned from his older cousin. The sweet and tender hurt/comfort is so lovingly shown, and the bond between the two of them is explored in a way that I find thoroughly satisfactory. This is a good read: suspenseful, sweet and even humorous by turns.

This story vividly brought to mind some of my own ventures into mirky lake waters, and I was constantly wincing with every step they took. If you can't see what you're walking on and you're not sure as to what exactly has been washing up on the shore, it's sometimes better to stay put. But at least they have food to compensate their adventure. That's more than most get.

I love the way that this author writes Merry. I enjoyed this story very much. There is so much detail in it and a bit of excitement as well. Very well written and filled with sharp images.

A nice gap-filler, very exciting. I was all set for Pippin to be the one to get into trouble here so it was a nice surprise to find Pippin rescuing Merry for a change, and doing such a good job at it. Very descriptive and detailed.
