Fantastic gapfiller! The brief mentions of torture are more then enough to set the scene, and Thrain's ramblings make for a nice capstone on what this dwarf has endured already. I loved Gandalf's remorse over the fact that he couldn't do anything more for any of these prisoners. Not while he was in disguise, at least. And the brief moment of sanity was powerful, and I wonder just what Thrain saw then. Certainly enough to trust. Good missing scene.

This piece always amazes me with how well it sets the mood in such a short space. The madness, the despair, the misery of it all... I can almost imagine something out of "Schindler's List", which I guess might not be far off, only this is much more urgent. Very well done, Az.

I don't believe I've ever seen a fic dealing with this before. Very original, and so concise, the moment of lucidity, yet not quite enough to give Gandalf all the information he needs.

This is a fine drabble overshadowed by the unlikelihood created by Tolkien and clearly illustrated here that Thror could have possibly hidden anything on him in Dol Goldur. It's a stickler.

Dwarves are tough, and Thror shows his mettle here: he's still got enough left to recognize a friend and pass on his legacy to his son.

An interesting view.
