This story is a great example of inversion of expectations. This particular king isn't one who went down in pseudo-history with a good reputation, and he's not the king you'd expect. I certainly didn't. And I will never be able to look at Beren and Lúthien's adventure the same way after this. Read this one when the angst of the Silmarillion starts to get to you: this should enable you to get through at least half of the Narn i hin Húrin.
