Summary: It is almost fifty years since the end of the Ring War. This short story opens with Tindómë (previously known as Dawn Summers) talking to Legolas, a month or so before the celebrations start, about how to avoid the attentions of the Gondorian ladies... Part of a series - but stands alone.

This story makes me chuckle every time I read it, and I can trace the germ of at least one of my own Legolas Fourth Age fics back to it. Those of us guilty of committing Legomance - even worse, Legolas/mortal OFC fic - are wittily rebuked by curiouswombat in this very funny piece, which has the poor Elf plaintively pointing out the sheer unlikelihood of his falling madly in love with a random aristocratic Gondorian maiden at a ball, and ruefully complaining that he [would rather face yrch] than spend yet another evening dodging the attentions of their rapacious mothers. The suggestions his female friends come up with for [the right kind of shield], from cross-dressing friends to pretending Legolas is gay or smitten with Gimli, have me chortling on every read, and I've re-read it a number of times as I find myself breaking off from a heated fandom discussion of Legolas' love life to direct others to it! Whether you are smitten with The One Elf yourself or can never understand what all the fuss is about, this story will raise a smile.
Author response: Hmm - you do not really need to feel yourself rebuked! I am so glad that it is one of your favourites, though - and I do keep thinking perhaps I should come back to it and write part two. Maybe sometime...

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this shorter piece and found myself disapppointed there wasn't more and it didn't end, as the elves have been betting, in their being 'swayed by the desires of the flesh'! Nicely told with a real swagger in the style that suits the subject perfectly. The conceit of the 'shield' makes absolute sense and the last line bound it all together in a very professional way. This worked well as a stand alone piece equally well as a linked piece.
Author response: Thanks Ziggy. I's so glad you enjoyed this one of 'The Small Returns' - whether Legolas and his shield were swayed or not is entirely up to your imagination... at least for now, but I might eventually go back.

That was really quite amusing to read, I loved your characters! Ha, and I loved your opening line. your Legolas is brilliant and very in-character. He was a joy to read. It's just a shame there isn't any more. I'd love to read what happened next :) *that was a subtle hint!* Thanks very much for your story! Caunedhiel
Author response: Thank you - I am considering your subtle hint carefully... a couple of people have asked if I would take this little tale further and I do plan to do so in the next couple of months. It will then be archived alongside this one as another chapter of the 'Small Returns' - try going back to check sometime in mid to late September!

A cute little sidestory to curiouswombats crossover AU with Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Yet one does not need to have read any of those to understand the little conspiracy being hatched in this funny tale!
Author response: Thank you for reviewing The Right Kind of Shield. - I'm so glad that you think it works as a stand-alone.
