This is a wonderful story about young Paladin Took doing a typical youthful prank to impress the lass of his dreams - Eglantine Banks. He had attempted to walk a tightrope but didn't make it all the way across. His father needed to climb a ladder to rescue Paladin and then hauled him off for a whoopin' with all the boys, and Eglantine watching him be dragged off by the ear. The story has a lovely ending however as Eglantine comes over to ask the heart-sore lad if he is alright and to sit beside him. She boldly lets him know that she has been watching him like he has been watching her and ends by saying she'll see him again as soon as he wants as her mother calls her away. And we know, all will be well in the world!

This is a simple snapshot of life in the Shire, very sweetly told. I liked how the snippet wasn't made to feel overly important or sensational, but rather served as a glimpse into the lives of these two characters, which I thought made it all the more effective.

There are not a lot of courtship stories out there about Paladin and Eglantine Took, which makes the few that do exist even more delightful. This one's a lot of fun, and we can see just where Pippin got some of his impulsiveness from! This story really made me smile!
