A fun Halloween story of the Fellowship listening to Aragorn tell a story of when he was a youth in Rivendell. He dressed as a Dwarf, knowing full well that Dwarves weren't welcome guests in the Elven realm, and had Legolas dress as an Easterling. Then, he arranged torches along the path down the hill where he intended to make his entrance. He had also stolen firecrackers from Gandalf at an earlier time when the wizard had visited. When the Dwarf and Easterling attacked the party of The Feast of the Dead, they were nearly killed themselves by the Elves who thought they were being invaded. Obviously the two survived but were duly disciplined by Elrond. Elrond's twin sons put in an appearance in their costumes as female Elves. The story and the story within a story are both thoroughly enjoyable!

This is a really fun frame-story, in which the Fellowship (movie-verse) are telling tales around the campfire, to celebrate the evening known to the hobbits as "Effeniht", by various other names in other parts of Middle-earth. Aragorn tells a tale of a prank gone awry when he was a child in Rivendell, a prank in which he was aided and abetted by some who were old enough to know better... I really like Elrond in this story; he's long-suffering and resigned to the shenanigans of the younger set. And I very much enjoy the camaraderie and bantering of the Company as they while away the time with their stories!

Like most holiday-centric tales, The Eve of Efenniht studies cross-cultural differences and traditions. I've seen a great many stories such as this for Yuletide/Winter Solstice, but not one that centers around the Fall Equinox, so this was certainly a unique and interesting tale.

I shouldn't think Elves would celebrate any feast having to do with the dead, as in the normal course of events, Elves do not die. Otherwise, this story, which is about the Middle-earth equivalent of Halloween, was entertaining. I found the "prank" more amusing than Elrond did. Nice story.

This was a fun piece. I am not quite sure if any of them would be celebrating a halloween-type event right after leaving Rivendell, but it was fun anyhow. Aragorn's prank was priceless. I do not think the twins could have thought of a better one. Gimli's voice was spot on.
