"And so I shall make the cage my armor." I had never thought of Eowyn's Dernhelm persona in quite those terms, but it's true on several levels. First, the name itself, "Dernhelm" -- hidden face. As matron of a house she learned to hide her true self and present only what was acceptable. Then there's the fact that it taught her to deny her emotions and be cold, mechanical, whatever it took to protect herself from Wormtongue's machinations and the more ordinary dangers of family lives. I loved the image that that line seemed to create, and that the rest of this drabble supported: a bird so strong that she took what other people used to restrain her, and used to her own advantage. It reminds me in a strange way of the Bible story of Samson wrecking the temple. Luckily for Eowyn it turned out better for her.

I loved the thought that pity from both Aragorn and Eomer would serve as a catalyst for Dernhelm, but even more than that, I loved the reasoning behind this idea and the way Eowyn accounts them brothers in this because of their pride. Perhaps most of all, though, I loved the way that their likeness was carried over into the creation of Dernhelm, who was like and yet not like Eowyn. The idea of Dernhelm being an extension of Eowyn's cage was brilliant, and it contained some wonderfully grim notions about this extension being a serviceable vessel to carry her to her demise. I had never thought of it in quite those terms, and I'll have to think about that a bit more. I'm really intrigued by the idea.

A very interesting view of Eowyn and her perceptions of people. It is very clever how you show her voice in this drabble.
