Summary: Some of the older lads at Brandy Hall thought it would be amusing to dare Pippin and Sancho to explore the Old Forest, looking for an old house which was built many years before by Men from another land. Rumour was they had committed a terrible crime and hid where they thought no one would search for them. That is, until two young hobbits accepted a dare. . .

Cathleen has long taken advantage of the fact that according to the Family Trees in Appendix C, Sancho Proudfoot and Peregrin Took are the same age. She uses this fact to give the youngsters a friendship that is far more adversarial and argumentative than Pippin's friendships with his older cousins Merry and Frodo. Sancho is the same age, and Pippin has no intention of backing down in front of him, or letting him tell him what to do. And Sancho feels exactly the same way. It's gotten the two of them in trouble more than once. As in this case, when they've taken a dare to enter the Old Forest in the hopes of finding a haunted house. I love the way this story never really makes the true story behind the dare involved clear. Did Berilac actually dare them, or did he not? Who took the dare in the first place, Pippin or Sancho? No one will admit who's at fault! In the end, it doesn't matter—they are wandering around in there and bound to find trouble if someone doesn't find them first. Naturally, Merry comes looking, along with another cousin… By the end of the night, the Old Forest is rather swarming with hobbits. I can easily imagine all the trees heaving a sigh of relief at the end.

An amusing story for anyone with experience wrangling younger cousins. When Pippin and Sancho brave the Old Forest on a dare, older hobbits Merry and Merimas go in after them. Frodo, unaware of Merry and Merimas' rescue attempt, forces Berilac, who had dared Pippin and Sancho to begin with, to accompany him as he too sets out after the missing hobbits. And it just goes from there. An entertaining story of young hobbits and late-night truancy. I had to laugh at [the sigh of relief] that goes up from the trees at the end. Little do they know...!
