An intriguing snippet of late Ring War fanfiction, this short story centers on an encounter between Imrahil and the sons of Elrond during the journey to the Morannon. In Tanaqui's hands, Imrahil is an excellent narrator, quick to notice things, and also very courteous and open to viewpoints not necessarily his own. I liked his rueful realization that it is not the accents of Aragorn and his northern companions that are strange, it is his own ear, since the Sindarin of Imladris would be old and pure. And there's nothing like a tale of a great victory by one's ancestors and their allies to warm a soldier's heart in the shadows of any sorcerously dark tower and on the way to nearly certain doom.

I like this small moment on the road to the Black Gate, this meeting between Prince Imrahil and the sons of Elrond. It is good to think of them telling stories of battles past, but well remembered, and so helping the night pass for Imrahil and the others around the fire. I liked, too, Imrahil's realisation of just who might be speaking Sindarin with something of an accent...!

This story reminds the reader of why the Eldar make the best historians and storytellers--because usually they were present at historical events! Good dialogue, fine characterization, well written.

This is such a natural encounter: Imrahil an educated Prince familiar with history, and yet even so, awed by the presence of Elrond's sons, who are figures out of legend. I like the idea of the three of them spending an evening before the battle recounting the tales of the past.

I enjoyed this account of a conversation between Imrahil and the twins on the way to confront Sauron. It must have been amazing for Imrahil to see history brought to life before his eyes and given him hope for the future. I especially liked the references to Aragorn and the way of telling the twins apart.

Lovely little vignette about the meeting and conversation between Imrahil and Elrond's sons.
