We start out with two little boys run away from home to find their mother, and the strange and dangerous adventures they have until they're rescued, then when they are safe home we see the family in crisis. The father, Feanor, who can't comprehend, or maybe understands all to well the longing for an absent mother, and who in a very unelvish display of his growing oddness puts a lock on the twin's bedroom door. We see the eldest boys, Maedhros and Maglor, still almost children themselves trying to rear their younger brothers with varying degrees of success. The hatred of the middle sons, who feel abandoned by their mother, is contrasted by the understanding of the older boys who realise something awful has happened between their parents, and the final, simple joy of the twins to be with their mother. The tragic figure in this story of a family gone haywire is Nerdanel who simply can't explain even, truly, to herself what went wrong, and who has to hide the ultimate shame of her husband's behaviour and the knowledge her mother was right: she should never have married Feanor. A heart-breaking story that drags you in and keeps you hooked from beginning to end.

Oh, I really enjoyed this view of young Feanorians. The whole thing showed waves of pain and heartache, and I really felt for all of the boys, and their parents. I even felt some sympathy for Feanor and that's unusual. Well done.
