I really enjoyed this look at some of the more mundane logistics involved in being one of the Dunadain. Or in being married to one. The adventurous aspects of their lives make for such great fic fodder that it's sometime forgotten that even the everyday routine was different for these people. Barter, hoarded coins, the scarcity of a surgeon's tools, nothing could ever really be taken for granted. But for the Rangers, there was also sometimes the unlooked for blessings of having contacts among the elves, and that is seen in this story as Halbarad arrives home early. Beautiful picture at the simple things in the lives of the Dunadain.

This was a birthday gift story which Beruthiel's Cats wrote for me last winter, and I absolutely loved it. She captured my original character Serinde really well, from her understandable worries over lack of funds and stretching every available resource as far as it will go, her speechless joy over a gift received, and delight in her husband's presence. Most excellently done - it now occupies a place on my e-Book reader.

What a great gift for a healer! I like the idea that Halbarad had a family, and you describe their relationship very well - with so little words. I can feel the warmth between the two of them.

What a wonderful tribute to the work of another author! Yes, I can so see this! Delightful. Serinde is portrayed a bit more teary that she appears in Surgical Steel's stories, but this is most plausible.
