There is one Hobbit of whom it is told that he left the Shire on some adventure (blamed, of course, on Gandalf's interference), who never came home again--Hildifons Took, one of the sons of old Gerontius. What if he had lived at least in part the life Tolkien had originally intended to be lived by the mysterious individual who was to lead the Ringbearer from Bree to Rivendell? For orignally that role was to be played by a Hobbit in wooden shoes called Trotter, a creature that in time was discarded in favor of a tall, dark Mannish stranger who was introduced to the Ringbearer and his party as Strider. Here we see Hildifons, who has been accepted by the Rangers of Eriador as one of their own, assisting a widow he had met when first running away from the Shire in a time of need. This tale is well done, showing both the Hobbit Ranger and the folk among whom he works and those he's befriended all at their best as all seek to survive disasters as well as they can. A delightful tale of what might have become of the Old Took's prodigal son who never returned home to the Great Smials, and a recipe fic as well. A winning combination!

As far as canon is concerned, Tolkien didn't seem to believe in coincidences. Apparently Dreamflower doesn't either as she pulls some loose ends together from one of her previous stories. I thoroughly enjoyed reading ["Trotter"] for last year's awards, and the chance meeting between him and Polly Thistlewool turns out to be not such a chance after all. Hildifons and Archer have an opportunity to help Polly and her son, and some of the barriers between Rangers and the average inhabitant of Eriador are broken down. Trotter is the perfect individual to bridge the gap as he comes from both worlds but is also somewhat removed from them as a hobbit. Perhaps the most amazing thing about this story is that it's made of original characters who feel as complete as any canon character and who so naturally inhabit Tolkien's world that it's difficult to imagine Middle-earth without them. A thoroughly enjoyable story, Dreamflower. Thank you!

I don't know the backstory to Dreamflower's Trotter, but it's not necessary to know that to enjoy the story. At its heart, it is a very simple story: one of old friends reunited just when one of them needs it most. Hildifons, who had disappeared out of the Shire awhile back and has become one of the Rangers, chances upon a friend's house with his partner, Archer, and through the course of lending a helping hand, Archer's people backed by his own generosity and Hildifons's stalwart testimony to the true character of the Rangers, come to be less feared - in one household, at least! And to top it off, we get a recipe from Dreamflower at the end, so Polly and her family aren't the only ones who learn something. A very sweet story, Dreamflower - thank you!

Dreamflower presents us with an idyllic piece of country life here, where kindly friends arrive just in time to help where help is needed. Like all of Dreamflower's recipe fics, this makes the mouth water.

I can just see them with their pockets spilling out apples! And so nice to see Trotter again!
