Summary: A collection of ficlets focusing on Denethor II, Steward of Gondor for the LJ stewards_archives Random Words challenge. The members of LJ community stewards_archives were asked to provide three random words to be used to inspire fics about any of Gondor's Stewards, ruling or otherwise. I chose to focus on Denethor as he is a character that I believe is often wrongfully maligned, especially since the films were released.(This is a collection of short pieces concerning Denethor, Steward of Gondor, from the Random Words challenge on LJ community stewards_archives. More ficlets will be added as inspiration strikes.)

I've never been good at writing something as structured as a drabble but I enjoy reading them when they are well conceived and constructed. As a writing form, it forces the writer to distill their ideas down to the bare bones and then to polish them into something striking and beautiful that touches on the emotions. [The Steward's Archives] is an execellent example of this format. This series has the added pleasure of being about one of my favorite characters. Using single word prompts, Dancingkatz manages to get us into Denethor's head and heart, and the apparent madman of the Hallows in the films who ran off the face of the cliff, and who, in the novel, fell beneath the ruin of the House of Stewards on that last horrible day becomes a truly tragic figure and a man that the reader can sympathize and identify with. The one that makes me smile most is Proposal--and it so reminds me of that scene at the end of Henry V where Henry is attempting to court Katherine. The tempering of Faramir is an excellent explanation for the the apparent dislike and despite that Denethor displays to his younger son in canon. But my favorite is the very last one, where one of Denethor's greatest losses is returned to him. I weep and rejoice with him in the end. Well done!

Beautifully written and I loved the titles. I have the darndest time with titles, but yours were perfect. Every little tale bore such wondrous meaning and emotions and the last - of Finduilas meeting him, holding him, kissing him to healing - was gorgeous!

Intriguing set of drabbles inspired by various word prompts, all focussing on and from the thoughts of, Denethor. I really liked the metaphor of Finduilas as the water bringing life and color to the stone that was Denethor. His grief over her loss, and his wondering that it took her loss for him to fully realize her importance, is very touching.

Three, [“Stone”] was my favorite. What a perfect metaphor, not only for a lover, not only for a ruler (“L’etat, c’est moi”), but for a Steward of Gondor, ruler of the city of stone. Well done.
