Although this story is a spin-off from a chapter of "Captain My Captain", it stands alone quite well. The narrator is a minor character who is brought to life, along with his siblings and Faramir with all the sensitivity and nuance I have come to expect of Altariel's fics. It depicts a family in the aftermath of war, and the pain and difficulty of coming to grips with loss, even or perhaps especially when that loss follows on years of a poor relationship. Nevertheless, Faramir's grief, gut-wrenching though it is, is quite restrained, and even understated. Done properly, as it is done here, that very restraint can treble the impact. This story to me echoes the real sense of helplessness that confronts a would-be comforter who realizes that there is no means of bearing the burden for the other, but only the need and ability to bear with. Compassionate, moving, and in the end hopeful, this is a powerful portrayal of the moment of grief and recovery that stays with the reader.

I reread very little fanfiction (unlike books) but this calls to me. As a writer I find it terribly depressing - oh to be able to write like that! - but as a reader I love the family relationships. If only people would write adult books about families like this.
