Go Gimli! The dwarf is more than restored to glory after his ratherÂ…interesting stint as comic relief throughout much of the movies. He had a few good moments in the movies, I suppose, but this ficÂ…this fic shows Gimli for the warrior he really is. And also for the person he is. The moments of battle were good, and Gimli's anger as it developed throughout the story was intense and believable. But my favorite moment was actually a somewhat quiet scene in which Gimli is asked (after a rather gruesome bloodbath during which he avenged his dead friends and their family) if he found what he was looking for. Gimli's response made the fic for me when he said no, that he instead found something in himself that he wished he'd never seen. This isn't a bloodthirsty depiction of a monster in dwarf's clothing or a bumbling sidekick who makes witty remarks and tumbles down the sides of hills. This is a balanced, thinking, fierce, and incredibly loyal dwarf who clings to the hope that his father is still alive and wrestles with ideas of rage and vengeance. Very well-rounded look at one of my favorite Tolkien characters.
