It might just be me, but I find villanelles insanely difficult to write. So I'm always amazed when someone else writes them so well. The ending couplet in this villanelle was a good choice, and there's quite a bit of foreshadowing going on here as far as embracing fire. But I can also see Denethor becoming passionate about a person, though not necessarily expressing that passion all the time. And when that person left, I could see this as an event that changed him. Anyway, great adherence to the form.

Denethor does have a strong voice, and certainly, the fire, pyre, and light/darkness imagery suit him.
