Dear Kaylee Arafinwiel, you have tackled in this ficlet one of those difficult concepts Tolkienââ¬â¢s work confronts us with: the relationships between mortals and immortals. I am not overly fond of the wide-spread fanon that elves would eternally (ha!) look down their noses at humans as being primitive and so short-lived that itââ¬â¢s not worth the effort getting to know them. I think if anything, they would have been fascinated with humans. After all, Tolkien doesnââ¬â¢t say anywhere that humans were intellectually wanting, and they certainly showed themselves to be active and creative, so I think they would have earned the respect and friendship of the elves. Tolkien sets and example with the longstanding connection between him and the chieftains of the Dunedain, and you have plausibly extended that idea here to show a similar relationship with Thranduil. I think the passing on the sceptre to the next generation, both literally and figuratively, is very well rendered. This is a well-rounded ficlet which I enjoyed reading.
Author response: Oh, Virtuella, thank you so much! I'm so glad you enjoyed this tale - as you know, I enjoy your stories, too :) I'm glad you found my story to be well-rounded and effective. *is blushing*

A moving look at an Elf saying good-bye to a beloved mortal ââ¬Åbrotherââ¬Â who is dying and the gift that he receives. Kaylee gives us the deep emotions that are felt between the various characters with quiet dignity without becoming maudlin and it is very easy to ââ¬Åseeââ¬Â this scene. Well done!
Author response: Thank you so much, Atto Fiondil. I really appreciate your reviews, as much as I know you've appreciated mine on your fics at SoA. I'm so glad you found this story moving - it's what I was going for. Tye-melin.

This is an interesting story that helps to explain why Legolas might have felt such a deep friendship and commitment to Aragorn.
Author response: Liadan, I admit I don't know your fics (or at least, not by this pen name) but I thank you for this review. I'm always grateful for new readers, as well as familiar ones!
