I love this story! It's such a great look into the minds and hearts of dwarves. I wonder if this is the kind of attitude that eventually led them to a Balrog, but regardless, it's a wonderful look at how dwarves view their work in the mines. They court the minerals. They flirt with them, and the stone seems to flirt back. I love how they all think of the lode as a "she" and that when the mithril seems to run out, some bid farewell while others decide to pursue. There are so many little tidbits caught up in such a small story. And of course, anything that has to do with the dwarves is going to draw my attention. They don't receive nearly enough scrutiny or respect.

Until someone else's comment I had no idea that this would be about a Dwarf and his lode. But it is, and it's a wonderful characterization of Dwarves in general to show how they love the mining they do.

This was so well-written, so very dwarvish in sentiment-love and craft, craft and love, and the joy of being caught up in a work that challenges and seduces you to carry on. This is everydwarf and any dwarf who speaks and gives us a glimpse of an underwritten corner of Middle-earth.
