Oddly enough the Tangled Web challenges at Tolkien Weekly inspired a number of drabbles about healing and also about the twin sons of Elrond. Jay's set of drabbles have the twins as supporting cast to their foster brother as the young Estel begins to learn the healing arts after an accident of his own. Learning new skills all the time, drabble by drabble, the young man is shown 'going up levels'. I think Jay's idea for how this advancement would be signified is probably unique - I certainly have not come across it before - and I love the idea of getting another embroidered leaf for each test passed, each lesson learnt, to add to the growing sheaf on his cloak. I think my favourite episode is the one where he is being called upon to stitch a wound - and where we discover eventually that the wounded one is Elrohir. But the last one is absolutely perfect and, I know from experience, that the young healer's emotions and his feeling of helplessness are absolutely right. I would certainly say that time spent reading this drabble set would be time well spent.

A well-written set of drabbles chronicling the young Aragorn's steps in learning the healing arts. I like the sense of multifaceted efforts in the series; as the boy learns basic precepts, clinical skills, herblore and studies a lot of written materials. The ending is humbling and heartbreaking, a milestone in any physician's life. Nicely done and very believable.

This is a lovely series of drabbles following Estel's path to become a healer. From the first interest as a child to the hardest lesson to be learned when as a healer. These little scenes mark milestones in Estel's education. I especially liked 'the moment of truth'.

I've always been fascinated how Aragorn became a healer, how much of his skill, was innate and how much learned and have indeed written my own story of several thousand words on the subject which made me especially appreciate and admire how Jay of Lasgalen has managed to encompass Aragorn's healer's journey so well into a short series of drabbles.

I read along with this as it was posted on Tolkien Weekly. Each of the drabbles works well in itself, and they build nicely on each other, too, until finally young Estel/Aragorn learns the hardest lesson a healer has to learn. Elrohir is a good teacher!

Put together, these drabbles paint a beautiful picture of a young Aragorn as he comes into his own talents and goals. Jay's imagery and emotion are perfect for setting the scene.

Jay has made clever use of a theme to create snapshots of Estel's progress in learning the healer's arts. A well-constructed series.
