Dear Larner, it is terrible to even think about the aftermath of a battle, of all those bodies lying about, and even worse to have the task to sort and bury them, yet it has to be done. In the midst of this horror, you skilfully raise the tension, making me wonder where in Middle-earth Legolas is going and what his intention is. Once this intention becomes clear, it seems like the natural, the necessary thing for him to do. We are left with the question of what will happen this time ââ¬â will there be another version of the Dead Marshes, or will these souls find peace? A thought provoking ficlet.

Even though we read and re-read the descriptions of the War of the Last Alliance and the Dead Marshes, itââ¬â¢s easy to forget that Elves died in that war, Elves such as Oropher, Amdir and Gil-galad, and that their bodies were buried before the gates of Mordor slowly to be corrupted into the ghost-lights of the Dead Marshes. This short but powerful piece brings it home in a very personal way and Larner does a good job of reminding us that the war that saw these Elven lords die never truly ended until now with the destruction of the One Ring.

I love this moment of connection and completion for Legolas, here acting as a prince of his people. It's as if, since he did not have an army of his own to command during the fight, now that the war has been won, he can address the army whose story has remained incomplete, its purpose unfulfilled - give the after-battle speech that Thranduil should have been able to give, had the Last Alliance served its true purpose. It's been a long wait for those resting uneasily in the meres, but Legolas's words help bring some peace to those lost in that struggle. Well chosen moment, Larner!

I can just see this scene as Legolas pays his respects to the fallen whose bodies still lie in the Dead Marshes. A thoughtful moment - a moment for him to quietly rejoice that the long battle is finally over - all, as always with Larner, perfectly captured in words.
