This was really quite funny, and very well-written. Frodo as the terror of the *daughters* of Buckland (or perhaps it's their fathers who are terrorized by the thought of what their daughters are up to with unknown debonair hobbits) is definitely not the gentlehobbit we see in later years. Merry's part as the unwilling and just slightly clueless messenger for ardent young women is well-played, as is Bilbo's knowing complicity. Maybell stands up very well to scrutiny; she knows what she wants and is willing to take some risks to get it, and she's certainly no blushing virgin. Forthright and matter of fact, with a certain wicked sense of humor, she strikes me as quite the bold lass. One hopes she never hears about Lilac...

This is great fun, with a wonderful community at Buckland and a delightfully earthy Frodo. But I do think the original rating was more accurate!
