Summary: Post Quest. Merry and Pippin are traveling through the Shire and have a bit of an accident. Merry uses herb-lore picked up on their Travels to help Pippin recover.

A winter trip between Crickhollow and the Great Smials goes wrong when Pippin's pony puts her foot through the ice on a puddle and the young Took gets thrown. Merry has good reason to be grateful to Elrond, Aragorn, and the other healers he met on the quest for the lessons in healing and herblore he's absorbed. A marvelous vignette of Hobbit practicality and caring.

A classic hurt/comfort for post-Quest Pippin and Merry--Pippin is injured as they travel across the Shire, and Merry must care for him in the absence of a healer. Very tender and sweet, and with an interesting idea of why Merry might have written his book on herb-lore.

I like stories that tell us how the Travellers make use of skills learned during the Quest after they have returned home and this one is excellent. A good story!

Sometimes it does just take a mother's touch to start feeling better. Very good characterization of the two hobbits and the OFC is well done as well.
