This sweet and gentle story takes place when a young Merry suffers a bout of chicken pox while visiting Pippin's family at Whitwell. An even younger Pippin then finds himself in the unusual positiion of having to care for his dearest older cousin. I very much love the way the small child tries to figure out the best ways to bring comfort to his Merry, and his confusion at Merry's continued illness. This is a lovely and gently told story, filled with love--not only from Pippin, but also Merry's aunt and uncle, as well as his other relatives, all of whom show their affection and worry about him. I do believe that this is my favorite of Anso's pre-Quest stories.

My favourite aspect of this story is the care shown to Merry by his Tookish relations. He is so obviously a beloved member of their little family, and Eglantine and Paladin are as loving and caring to him as if he were their own child. The love that Pippin has for Merry really shines through here, and it is so sweet to see the little lad devotedly caring for his older cousin.

I love the way that Merry is so very obviously one of the family here, just as much as Pippin or his sisters. The way that the Took's care for him during his illness was gentle and kind and I enjoyed the way that Pippin tried so hard to take care of Merry when usually it is the other way round. Anso has a good grasp of hobbit family values which really shines in this story.

How Anso's love of her characters shines through! There just aren't enough Merry-centred stories, and I'm glad that Merry is Anso's favourite hobbit!
