This is a great yarn, examining the unique frame of mind that would lead someone to serve at such a lonely outpost (or perhaps that such a soldier would have to develop to survive it). I particularly liked the blending of Rohirric and Gondorian traits: these were certainly Gondorians, but Gondorians of the north, with some carry-overs from being so close to Rohan like the oral transmission of tales. Nice use of believable OCs.

I've never seen anyone do anything at all with the poor fellows stuck up on the heights on beacon duty. A rather dull and barren existence it seems to be! I loved the banter at the beginning, and the fact that the exchange of mocking truths, that "each knowing these bone deep truths about the other - over such inconsequentialities - was a comfort and joy to both."

I like the stories focusing on those characters who were seldom seen or severely unappreciated, so of course I liked this story. I enjoyed the details given to each of the characters and the little quirks and traits that came out over the course of the day. It made them seem very real, which made the emotions easier to realize in the end.

Another story of endurance beyond hope. What must it have been like to watch the beacons year after year, seemingly to no purpose?
