This is an amazing, warm, and loving story. The author writes with depth and cares the emotions of the characters. The hesitation and motherly care of Esmeralda. The letters of Frodo that contains wisdom, but also feelings and worry on how his friends will take his parting. The effect it has on Merry is well written, it shows that the author too great effort in background research to give the story a hobbity touch.

Frodo and Bilbo are right. Merry is probably the one most able to appreciate that map. After all, it was Merry who spent much of his time looking at maps in Rivendell, it was Merry who organized the conspiracy, and it was Merry who had the courage to disobey Theoden and ride with the Rohirrim. The Magnificent, indeed. He would appreciate a dwarven map and the tale of adventure that accompanies it.

This is a lovely and poignant explanation of what became of Thorin's map, the one of the Lonely Mountain that was used by Bilbo to find Smaug's back door. Frodo has left it for Merry, but he is not to find out or open it until he is Master of Buckland. Frodo's message to Merry is so full of love and wisdom, and Merry's grief is so sharp. Very beautifully done.

This is a lovely gesture of Frodo’s to ease Merry’s grief just a little, and the gift couldn’t be more perfect.
