This is a bittersweet story in which Theoden and Eomer share a ritual not long after Eomund's death. It was very sweet to see Theoden interacting with his young nephew; the family dynamics were well told, but what I found most fascinating was the hints at Rohirric culture we get through the ceremony itself. Here is a culture very closely tied to horses, and while the details are (I assume) the author's invention, it reads like something that have come straight from Tolkien. All in all a very enjoyable read.

My favorite moment in this story was when Theoden described to Eomer how Eomund won his respect. That was a great retelling, and I can see a lot of his father has been passed on to Eomer. The final hint to Theoden about Theodwyn beating him anyway was priceless. And I enjoyed Theoden's characterization. His concern for Eomer was very touching, and I loved the way he went about solving it. Trust the Rohirrim to turn to their horses. Great vignette!
