A wonderfully humorous story by Cathleen. Anyone who has had to live in a house with a child learning to play an instrument will instantly be able to sympathize with Paladin, Eglantine, Bilbo, Frodo, Merry and Sam. Paladin, to protect his own fiddle, has bought Pippin a fiddle of his own and the lad is extremely anxious to improve, wanting to practice nearly non-stop. But the fiddle is a touchy instrument to learn to play well and can produce some of the most awful noise in the process. The Tooks get some relief by sending the lad to Bag End where he shares his talents with his cousins and Sam. In the end, Bilbo begins to consider buying a goat. After all, goats will eat most anything . . .

LOL! This is a really funny bit of tweaking of the fanon (one of my own favorites, truth be told) of a musical Pippin. Most of us depict his as very talented and quickly able to pick up and learn just about any instrument, a fiddle being the most popular. In this wee Pippin tale, Cathleen takes a slightly more realistic approach-- wee Pippin's fiddle-playing is definitely at the beginner's stage and is annoying everyone around him right and left, even his stuffed pig Tulip is unhappy. Will he ever learn to play it properly? Who knows? Somebody is certain to feed that fiddle to a goat before he gets that far...*grin*

With little Pippin sneaking his father's violin away constantly, Paladin thought he'd distract the child by giving him his own instrument. However, the gift backfired once Pippin began trying to play. If only he were as capable as he thinks himself! Ornaments and treasures are falling and eyes are nearly gouged as the child seeks to entertain everyone--and everyone seeks to find ways of distracting him. Perhaps Bilbo ought to get that goat he's been considering.... A lovely giggle as we realize not even Tulip can take much more!

Yeah, I think Pippin should stick to singing to! The poor parents and cousins! Still a sweet story. And love Frodo curled up with a book too. :)
