Free verse can be wonderfully disorienting, and it's used here to give us a quick but very deep look at Merry's mind. He's confused and hurting and fearful, and you can feel it all the way through the poem although he never really comes out and says it himself. The repetition of the line "you're too young" is done extremely well, and I like how Merry includes not only himself but also Elrond. The poem is short and soon over, but before it ends it tracks the entire course of Pippin's journey up to the aftermath of the Ring War in Ithilien. I love the contrast that Merry includes, specifically Pippin's quick thinking that saved them both from the Orcs in Rohan set against his foolish actions in dropping stones in Moria. Great poem!
