Summary: The Mouth of Sauron came before the Black Gate to negotiate with the Captains of the West. What did he think? The story begins as movie-verse, but evolves into a connection of the scene in the movie and in the book, anchoring it in the book-verse.

This is a highly-original story that utilizes an unusual character: the "Mouth of Sauron." The author has done a fine job of portraying this thoroughly unpleasant and degenerate character, as well as comparing and contrasting that character with Aragorn. This is *very* much the Aragorn of the bookverse, a most honorable man who nevertheless has the strength and determination to be king. The reader is fascinated until the very end, and the description of the swordfight in the final chapter alone is done so well that the story might well have been written by a professional. In spite of the fact that the main character of this story is thoroughly evil, it is a delight to read. Well done!

In this short ficlet Mirach has done well as she intended—brought that movie-verse moment in which Aragorn, dressed in ancient armor from the earliest days of the dual kingdom of the Dunedain, moves forward to bring an end to the gloating of the Mouth of Sauron, into the realm of the book. We see the contempt of the Mouth for Gandalf and Aragorn as he watches the grief and concern of each for whoever it was who bore the cloak and mithril shirt into Mordor, realizing they are hiding their shock at the sight of these tokens. And he truly believes that his role as Sauron’s herald and negotiator will protect him! What a delicious irony to see that last word clipped off as it was in the movie! Well, well done!

You wouldn't dare, indeed. The Mouth of Sauron is so full of himself. I think this piece is a nice elaboration on the scene in the movies. It captures the surprise at the discovery that he underestimated his opponents.

A very interesting description of how Mouth of Sauron died; I have to say that I agree with Mirach - movieverse just doesn't feel right. The end of this story was a little unexpected for me, but I think it's realistic. Well written, all together.

An interesting take on one of the more disturbing scenes in PJ's films. I liked the way the end of the piece reflected its parallel movie scene.
