A wonderfully sweet story about how Pippin can wrap two beaudacious lasses around his finger at the Green Dragon at the tender age of eleven. Merry is green with envy, being nineteen years old, and Frodo really wants nothing to do with the tavern--trying to keep a safe distance from any lass at the moment. he even entertains the idea of running to Buckland, but Merry explains why that is a bad idea. As we know, hobbits do love their food, so eventually, Frodo's appetite--and Merry's conniving--wins out--with very comical results! In the end, everyone is happy, though--and with a flavourful recipe to boot! Wjere else can a reader find fluff, comic relief, and a delicious recipe all in one smack? I absolutely enjoyed this story. The author, as usual, paints a lovely portrait of the relaionships between the main characters, and makes the reader feel quite at home while "sitting" at the Green Dragon watching everything unfold. I thought it was an utter delight to read, from beginning to end.

Oh, I love this story! I loved the first one, “Steak and Mushrooms” and this is a perfect follow-up to that tale. Merry is in perfect Brandybuckish character here, and I really liked his logical reasoning for going back to the Green Dragon hoping to this time actually catch the eye of the serving lasses there. Frodo and Pippin are very well written too, and the relationship between the three of them is so already comfortable and established that it is easy to see why years later Merry and Pippin will unhesitatingly follow Frodo into danger. I loved the scene at the Dragon, especially the bit where Pippin mentions how pleased his mum would be to see his sisters trained as serving wenches. That line was priceless! It won’t be long before Merry’s quicksilver mind (a very fitting reference that Budgielover often applies to Merry) figures out that the attraction that lasses have for sweet little Pippin could be useful instead of frustrating!

Sometimes young men have difficulty understanding the fascination women feel for small children; and in this case Merry and Frodo are both left at a loss to understand why Pippin, who's only eleven, after all, gets all the attention. This story is fraught with humor as we see Merry and Frodo making themselves ridiculous in the attempt to get equal time from the server at the Dragon, and as they watch Pippin go away time after time with treats the twerp doesn't deserve. A good story to read when one needs a lift.

Merry is wicked to terrorise his older cousin with the dangers of matchmaking female relations. And he really ought to understand that Pippin's serious cuteness is an advantage - if he can only learn to play it properly. I loved Pippin's proposal of marriage - after all, the way to a hobbit's heart is through his stomach. And I suspect that, no matter how many times they try this, Pippin will always manage to do it again.

From the very first line of this funny fic, we--and Frodo--have a pretty good idea what we’re in for: ["I've a superb idea," Merry announced. Frodo considered his options. The rain drumming on the roof was possibly loud enough to say that he hadn’t heard Merry's remark.] And we're off and running! With light, breezy humor, Budgie teaches us a thing or two about hobbit nature: the lasses can’t resist cute “little darlings," and the lads can’t resist...food. I love the fact that despite Merry's and Frodo's intent to court the comely Peony and Daffodil, it’s their grey-haired mum all three cousins end up vying for once they taste her cooking. Great fun!

This recipe!fic is a sequel to another recipe!fic, "Steak and Mushrooms". In this story, Merry, still eager to impress the serving maids at the Green Dragon, insists that he, Frodo and Pippin return. Alas for Merry--Pippin's charm is still too much for him.

My favourite part of this story is the relationship between Frodo, Merry and Pippin. I found the plot to be very believable, for who could fail to succumb to Pippin's charming innocence?

Utterly delightful, and still on my translation list... the story how Frodo Baggins and Meriadoc Brandybuck discover that using Wee Pippin as an alibi to impress pretty lasses is not the best of choices (and that tale even includes a nice recipe!). Wonderfully done!
