I've decided that Silmarils make great fic material. Gems that can set elf against elf and form the history of nearly the entire First Age are powerful, and if an author knows how to tap into that power, an author can have quite a fic on his/her hands. Bryn knows how, and Bryn taps for all its worth. And this fic isn't even finished yet! But what little there is now is enough to make me catch my breath. The characters are stunning, and the slow devolution of Aragorn's mind was fascinating to watch. Arwen is very much at the top of her game, especially when she turns to Legolas as a conspirator and confidant. The confrontation between Legolas and Aragorn, complete with raging thunderstorm and lightning, was fantastic, and just for a moment, I thought I understood the madness that drove FŰanor to start the first kinslaying. The fight was fast and furious, and the consequences for both Aragorn and Legolas are fleshed out well. Enter Gimli, who is a solid, stabilizing presence for as long as he stays out of the corsairs' hands, and Bergilů Well, I won't say anything about Bergil in case someone reading this has yet to read Marinus Stiria, which would be a great crime. The drama and tension in this story is great, and the added bits of humor serve as a beautiful contrast to the darker themes within the story. Morgoth gives me shivers, the sea-longing makes me weep, and the somewhat bumbling attempts of the heroes to right what has gone wrong leave me on the edge of my seat wanting to jump in and shake somebody. Very believable and very real dramatic fic.

A disturbing story of what might happen should a Silmaril wash up on shore, setting friend against friend. Oh, and Morgoth's trying to get back into Middle-Earth. I like that Legolas tries to do the right thing, but I'm afraid that the story has left off at a bad point. Bergi! And Gimli's been keel-hauled and Aragorn and Legolas seem to be captured. The really creepy Corsair has the stone. Oh dear!
