Here we have yet another of my favorite dramatic fics. And this one packs a punch. The plot twists and turns at every opportunity, throwing clues left and right but never fully revealing itself. You think you have a handle on it, and then it swerves in a new direction, addinglayers and layers to the mystery until it is so complex you are forced to just sit back and enjoy the ride. And what a ride it is. One of the strongest aspects of this fic is the impeccable ensemble characterization. Etharei takes an enormous cast of characters and manages to give each one a moment in the spotlight. And while in the spotlight, they are beautifully characterized and enhanced. I think my favorite characters in Etharei's capable hands would be Elladan, Elrohir, Merry, the OC Derinsul, Gimli, Arwen, and Legolas. That's only a small portion of the cast, which might give you some idea as to just how complex this story is. Another indication would be how Etharei has put these characters together. Most fics team up Elladan and Elrohir, or Legolas and Gimli, or Legolas, Gimli, and Aragorn. Etharei doesn't follow most fics. The twins are separated, Aragorn and Arwen are separated, the start of the fic has all Three Hunters separated, and in place of these usual team ups, we get to see more unusual interactions (such as some very insightful dialogue between Elrohir and Merry). The result is that the story feels very fresh and original, which it is, but the tension between characters who don't usually interact adds an entirely new and exciting dynamic.
