Wonderfully chilling look into dwarven superstitions. I like this quite a bit. I generally like anything that expands on dwarven culture, but this was especially well told. The descriptions, in particular, were amazing, and I could picture each and every step the Fellowship took as they followed Gandalf and Gimli upon the stairs. Nice insert into the journey through Moria.

It took me awhile to realize who the narrator was and the last line came as a bit of a surprise.

This story makes the most of the Khazad-dm scenes. Feeling one's way in the darkness, aware of the morbid history one is literally passing through. Boromir's memories of old superstitions in Gondor, of counting every stair in the Tower, were very aptly juxtaposed with the climb up the stairway of Khazad-dm. Great atmospheric writing!
