Summary: A quintet of drabbles held together loosely by the theme of civil strife and the view from the losing side. Such is the way of the world, where good will is insufficient to accomplish its final end... Melkor, Manwë, Ornendil, Miriel, Aranarth, Eärnur, a humble cobbler, and gratuitous philosophical evocations.

I liked the "gratuitous philosophical evocations." Great drabbles, all of them, and I like how they were each more or less from people about to head into hardship or doom but also how these people approached their doom so differently. My two favorite drabbles were "Blood Ties" and "Olive Branches." I loved Miriel's take on her role in Numenor and how she sees herself as a divider who still holds the country together. Fascinating idea that I'll have to think about later. And I loved Aranarth's response to Earnur as he noted that Gondor arrived too late to save the kingdom but in time to save their lives. I'm still trying to decide if that was more rebuke or gratitude. I'm inclined toward the latter, but he does make a vow and a promise toward the end that makes me wonder how much of the former was intended. Very intriguing ideas here.

It was this collection of short shorts that changed my mind about drabbles, at least when a very good writer puts five of them together with a common theme. Dwim writes elegantly, sparely, and conveys such an emotional punch with each piece. My hands-down favorite was Blood Ties because of the way it captured the tension between danger and courage. I loved the glimpse into life in late Numenor - please pardon the lack of diacritical marks in that word - and I thought using "the Templers" was a great touch.

I think what I really like about this set of drabbles is how they breathe new life into old relationships. They seem to be ones that canon gives us a lot of background for how the two should have related, and that fanfic writers (at least myself) love to speculate about. but Dwim has twisted those relationships not completely beyond relationship, but just the right amount to make me look at them anew. Add to this the rich details... I'm amazed it's only 500 words, quite frankly. Very well done, Dwim.

Chilling, insightful. I have to say that Blood Ties is my favorite. There are so many possible sides to Miriel's story - but I especially like this one, it fits well with my own beliefs about her.

An interesting set of reflections. The play of these images over the history is interesting.
