My favorite thing about this story is how we see the progression of Merry and Pippin's relationship as they progress along the Quest. The imagery is so vivid you can feel it. The vignette at Bregalad's house remains my favorite, because I love it when Pippin comforts Merry and keeps him from worrying too much. You can feel Merry's worry and sadness here, and also Pippin's determination to help.

This author excells at progressive fics, that is, showing how a similar scenario is re-enacted at different times, and how it is the same, and how it has changed. This is Merry/Pippin, but it's very mild--the important thing is how they have stuck to one another through all the trouble, and how they comfort one another. The lyrical prose and the depth of feeling are very palpable.

This is a lovely, sensuous story. The descriptions are vivid and the emotions are real. Bittersweet, of course, but you can really feel the relationship between Merry and Pippin as it changes, yet remains the same. Pippin helps Merry remember his cheer, and Merry helps Pippin sort out his thinking. What comes through overwhelmingly is how grounded they are in each other.

I like the bit back in Crickhollow the best. I am left with the impression that they will be happy together here, beyond all doubt and fear at last.

It is so clear in this story that Merry and Pippin draw strength and comfort from each other. Lovely writing!
