I'm writing this review at 12:33 pm on July 24. The temperature right now is 102 degrees, with a heat index of 107, and I've never been so happy to read a Fellowship Yule story as I am right at this moment. *g* And this one is a particular delight. I have a real soft spot for stories featuring Boromir and the hobbits - I love seeing the gentler side of Boromir's nature. Boromir's method of distracting Pippin - get him talking - was just brilliant, and his tending to Pippin's wrist provided a very good demonstration of skills Boromir would utilize as a field commander, tending to young and inexperienced troops. How like Bilbo to send a special supply of treats for a Yule celebration, knowing how much that would mean to the members of the Fellowship to have a taste of home, each of their homes, on such a night. A very gentle, heartwarming story.

The combination of Pippin and Boromir is always entertaining, and Cathleen makes the most of it here. Trapped on a ledge, Boromir shows his wisdom and ability to lead by distracting Pippin with questions and stories (which Pippin is more than happy to share) while the hobbit's wrist is set. But Boromir isn't the only one taking care of others, and I love the characterization stroke Cathleen employs as Pippin quickly interrupts Boromir after the others arrive and declares himself alright. The fact that Boromir opts not to correct him is equally telling. I also loved the inclusion of Bilbo. The old hobbit himself never made an appearance, but his contribution to the feast was a pleasant surprise.

There are lots of sweet stories about the Fellowship finding a way to mark the occasion of Yule on the Quest. This one is delightful, as the members of the Company set out to find what they can to create a bit of holiday cheer. What sets this one apart is the little side adventure that Boromir and Pippin have along the way. Moments between Boromir and Pippin are always to be cherished, and this one is quite nicely done-- a tiny bit of danger, and just a smidgen of h/c, as well as a very endearing conversation. All finished off with a heartfelt celebration of the occasion. All in all a very nice holiday treat!

I always love stories that show the genuine care and affection Boromir had for the hobbits. And seeing the Fellowship in a lighter moment, able to enjoy each other's company and be at peace is always a joy. There must have been so few opportunities to not be on guard, and this story paints a lovely picture of one possible moment. Hobbits are often portrayed in a celebratory manner, and here it's great to see the men gleefully joining in and actively participating. It's a lovely tale.

To find ways to celebrate the turning of the year while upon the road required ingenuity and forethought by the Hobbits of the Fellowship, and brought special comradeship between Boromir and Pippin when they found their search for something for the sparse "feast" took them to a place they'd not thought to visit. Plenty of delightful Hobbit lightness-of-heart, even when it must be experienced on a fairly narrow ledge! I'm so glad Cathleen produced this treasure for the Yule gift story exchange!
