Summary: "The Fall of Gondolin": "...so perished the Lord of the Fountain after fiery battle in cool waters." An important episode in the Fall of Gondolin, from the point of view of Glorfindel.

This story made wonderful use of contrasts. The action was fast and furious, but the moments in between were so quiet that it was eerie, particularly the moments with Glorfindel tending to Ecthelion. They were juxtaposed nicely by Ecthelion's last hurrah in his fight with Gothmog, a fight that went so fast and was over so quickly that I was as taken aback as Glorfindel when Tuor grabbed his arms. The contrasts make this such a powerful story because the extremes are even more vivid. Hope and despair were another two contrasts that were used well, especially when Egalmoth showed up. The reunion was very hopeful, but Glorfindel's acknowledgement of reality made the story dark again. And it felt darker for having been a little brighter. Great writing.

A rather grim account of the fall of Gondolin, and something is actually made of Ecthelion's slaying of the Balrog. Intense where it needs to be, and detached also where necessary as Glorfindel slogs his way through the final defense of the city and marches towards his own doom all unwitting.

This piece does a first-rate job at looking at twhat might have been Glorfindel's thoughts during the siege of Gondolin. The confusion and the terror of it all (and the odd bit of hope that surged up from time to time) was especially well done.
