The author mentioned this story in one of her others and from that moment on, I looked forward to this tale. I was not disappointed. I loved how the author wrote Pippin's eagerness to give his cousins the benefit of the doubt and to try his best to like them in spite of their treatment of him. Merry's protectiveness of Pippin in this one is also very good. I do like that Merry became angry when Pippin nearly killed himself while attempting something foolish. Merry's reaction seems perfect for the situation. This is a wonderful story filled with a bit of suspense, a bit of angst, but mostly if is filled with affection.

I really enjoyed this tale because it takes a very dangerous situation and teaches us all a lesson from it which starts with peer pressure, takes us through the anguish of possible loss of life over this pointless dare, and then we see how the bonds of love between the best of friends are renewed, strengthened. We can all learn a lesson or two from this wonderful story.

Clovis Banks - the hobbit who makes Lotho Sackville-Baggins look a decent chap. And Cado. Who, if taken away at birth, might have been all right. I suppose the only surprise is how they managed to survive Merry's wrath as long as they did. I am being complimentary when I say what a truly nasty story about truly nasty hobbits. Who do, finally, get their comeuppance.

A very serious story, and written very realistically. Well done.
