Ah--a truly delightful Pippin and Tulip tale for the afficionado! We have a room with Pippin in one corner, Sancho Proudfoot in the opposite one, and Tulip the pink knitted piglet in a third, and Pip and Sancho are arguing as to which one's fault it is they are all there. Sancho is certain that Pippin is on the way to insanity with his ongoing conversations with Tulip, but in the end has to admit perhaps Tulip is right when she explains who was truly at fault. The relationship between these two distant cousins of the same age is perfectly expressed, and the behavior of each of the three miscreants is so right for the ages and personalities. A lovely humorous moment, with, of course, Tulip managing to get the last word. Delightful!

Cathleen is one of the few hobbit-writers who makes good use of the fact that Pippin and Sancho Proudfoot were born in the same year according to the Family Tree. She's given Sancho the characterization of being a bit of a bully, and the dynamic between him and Pippin tends to be one of competition and one-upmanship. Whenever they get together they are bound to get into mischief-- and to end up getting punished together. Their conversation (or argument) as to who's to blame is made even funnier by the ever-present Tulip, Pippin's toy, and her tart observations. A clever and cute bit of childhood fluff.
