Definitely one of my all-time favorite works of fanfiction. This is a tightly-knit story that sends out no red herrings and weaves every single minute detail into the final tapestry. Personal problems feed into the larger problems, and solutions trickle their way down from a myriad of different directions until they coalesce into a larger picture and readers sit back, hit their heads, and wonder why we didn't see it before. What I like best about this fic is the characterization. There are six canon characters and an encampment of OCs. None of them are overlooked. In fact, the OCs could easily hold the story themselves. They are complete, vibrant, believable personalities, and we are drawn into their world through details, actions, and a very fluid narrative. The canon characters are expanded into amazing personalities. Ithilien takes attributes and hints given in the books and then expounds upon them for all they're worth, creating well-rounded characters that shine each time they show up on a page. And because the characters are so convincing, the drama and the action of the story becomes that much more real and vivid. The pace takes its time getting started, but the start is so enjoyable as our six heroes set out that I sometimes wish it would continue to meander. But Ithilien knows what she's doing, and when things get moving, the story gets very exciting very quickly. By the end, it's an amazing race to the finish, and I had to stop myself from jumping ahead to find out how it all finishes. And Ithilien ties up all the loose ends, putting a very satisfying conclusion on a very well told story.

Ithilien started me with WIPs, and she's one of the last WIPs I've been readering. And this story is a good reason why. It's painful waiting for the next chapter, wondering if, finally, the story will turn and give the good guys a break. So many real human (and Elvish) emotions and situations played out in this story, and even the more "paranormal" events were handled with a sense of reality. All of the familiar characters felt right, but in a more modern way of presenting them, close-in, emotional, thoughtful. And angsty as all get out!
